Just like the Berlin Wall, barriers that once seemed impenetrable are now being dismantled brick by brick. Japan, Cyprus, Brazil, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and Thailand are some of the latest countries to accept, if not fully embrace, the changing of the tide and the popular demand for legalised casinos and gambling. Many of these countries have a longstanding political, cultural or religious objection to gambling, but the number continues to be diminished and is now mostly constrained in Communist China and countries under Islamic Law.
In many countries betting, casinos and horseracing have been widely accepted community activities enjoyed by millions. The advent of online casinos, super lotteries and the increased appeal of poker and sports betting have added great momentum, but it is perhaps also true that there is an increased demand for “entertainment”, a push-back on imposed political restrictions and an economic realisation that there are tax benefits to be had too. Whatever the driving force, modern, legalised and regulated gambling is infinitely better than its illegal, unregulated and unscrupulous black-market alternative. Where will be next?
